More information about our Centre

Our organization is one of the first enterprises worldwide to offer paternity test online and by mail. In fact, for each 4 private DNA test sold in our intial province, 3 are performed by our organization. Order a test and a kit directly online, or visit us - zero wait time and no appointment required - in order to perform a DNA test. Please note that the test sent out by mail is as valid and as accurate as the one performed in our office. Simply pick the one that work best for you.

In Canada, the DNA paternity test is not considered a medical test and is, therefore, not offered in hospitals or as a part of the healthcare system. Our laboratory is accredited. To perform a DNA test, the analysis must be ordered directly from a reputable laboratory that specializes in the subject matter. It is not required to obtain a medical prescription or a court order to purchase and perform a DNA test in Canada.

Our organisation guarantees that the procedure will be simple and efficient. Indeed, when you order a DNA test we will send you a collection kit that includes everything required - including detailed instructions -. The samples will be collected by yourself with a mouth swab by swabbing against the interior of the mouth. Once received by our laboratory, the results will be available in 10 business days. This is a very simple procedure that is completely pain free, and only takes a few seconds to complete.

Special and non-standard samples

For the rare cases where it is not possible to use our kit

Sometimes, it is not always possible to obtain samples directly from the people that need to take part in the analysis. For example, the person might be deceased, lost or not available, etc. Consequently, it is possible to perform a DNA test using non-standard samples. Our laboratory is specialized in the analysis of non standard samples.

Frequently asked questions about paternity testing in Canada

1. What does a paternity test consist of?

The test based on desoxyribonucleic acid - DNA - will analyse the genetic material present in the cells of the human body. DNA from an individual is the same regardless of where its taken: Saliva, blood, hair, skin, sperm, etc. It is unique to each individual and does not change with time.

Since the DNA of each person comes from each parent in equal part, it is possible by doing a DNA test to determine the presence or absence of a paternity link between the tested individuals. The same principle is applied to determine other types of family relationships such as: Grandparents, siblings, cousins, twins or maternity.

2. What type of sample are accepted?

Saliva collection from a mouth swab is the method our laboratory uses the most often. However, it is not always possible to obtain samples directly from the people that need to be tested. Therefore, it is possible to perform a DNA test by using other types of samples such as blood, hairs, human tissue, sperm or amniotic liquid. Our laboratory can analyse all of these types of samples.

3. Who must supply samples?

For a paternity test, the DNA of the alleged father and the DNA of each child participating in the test will be required. The accuracy of our paternity test is > 99.9999%. It is not necessary to include the mother's DNA in the test, however, its presence will significantly increase the accuracy of the test. For other family relationship tests, it is always recommended to include the mother's DNA or other additional participants in order to increase the accuracy of the test.

4. How long does it take until I receive the results?

A standard paternity test comprising one alleged father and one child is generally completed within 10 business days following the reception of the samples by the laboratory.

5. Is the test admissible in court?

Yes, the paternity test based on DNA is admissible in court if the collection is performed in the presence of a neutral witness. This can be done at our Montreal office (we will provide a witness) of by asking someone who is not a member of the family (e.g. a neighbour) to witness the collection process.

6. Who must pay the fees?

The participants to the test must pay the fees for the analysis.

7. What is the accuracy?

The precision of a paternity test based on DNA is 100% when the alleged father is not the biological father; in other words, when there is "exclusion". When there is "inclusion", i.e. when the alleged father is the biological father, the accuracy is en average, 99.9999%. In some rare cases (if the genetic variance between the tested individuals is very weak, or if there is a punctual mutation), the laboratory may recommend to test the DNA of the mother in order to increase the accuracy of the test.

8. What is the minimum age to participate?

There is no minimum age to participate in a DNA test. A prenatal test is also possible if the mother is willing to provide a genetic sample from the placenta or from the amniotic liquid. This type of sample is obtained by surgery which itself is available at a clinic in Montreal that we work with. This is a procedure that does have risk and can be done only with a medical prescription.
